German-Czech Teacher Education Study
In highly demanding professions like teaching, coping with occupational strain is an important prerequisite for occupational well-being and work-related performance in a long-term perspective. The link between work-related coping capacities and personality traits and competencies has been repeatedly investigated in Germany. It was revealed that the quality of teaching was significantly impaired in teachers displaying risk work-related coping patterns. In student teachers assigned to undesirable work-related coping patterns the learning goal orientation and intrinsic study motivation was shown to be diminished. The career choice motivation of German teacher students is predominantly intrinsic and they are motivated to pursue the career in teaching. In the Czech Republic, the unsatisfactory pay of teachers and their low social status seem to be the culprit of teacher training being perceived as a second choice study. However, there is still a lack of evidence regarding the characteristics of Czech teacher students, especially in an international comparison. This study seeks to investigate the possible link between career choice motivation, study motivation, and unsatisfactory work-related coping patterns. The main aim of the study is to determine whether differences in career choice motivation, study motivation, and work-related coping patterns exist between German and Czech teacher students.
The sample consists of about 580 students from both countries who completed an online provided questionnaire.
