Research Project: Platformization, Forms of Authoritarianism, and the Future of Democracy: Perspectives from the Global South
Project Outline
This project funded by Gerda Henkel Stiftung examines the effects of platformization on democracy in the Global South under the contemporary authoritarian turn through subprojects that focus on the cases of Argentina, Brazil, India, Turkey Thailand and Myanmar. It explores how digital platforms and their algorithmic power transform political communication, labor processes, and subjectivities through the novel ways introduced by platformization in terms of the circulation of information, discourses, and emotions along with the organization of work. The interdisciplinary perspective and broad comparative focus of the project will offer a unique contribution to the literature on authoritarianism and the future of democracy that moves beyond the Global North-centered conceptions.
