Teaching
At the Chair of Education with a focus on Diversity Research and Educational Spaces in Middle Childhood, the transfer of knowledge between research and teaching is international, across all levels and multi-perspective.
The relationship between theory and practice is reflected in curricular teaching cooperations with (external) school experts (e.g. from architecture, cultural studies or social pedagogy) and made fruitful for educational professionalization processes.
Research
This chair combines epistemological work with empirical research in the following areas:
- Professionalization of Teacher Education
- Diverisity and Inclusive Gifted Education
- Education and Spatial Research
- Internationalization of Teacher Education

Digital Guest Lecture: "Professionalization of Teacher Education in Ghana: Beyond Content, Context and Theory" (11.06.2024, 12:00 online Zoom)
Prof. Dr. Dandy George Dampson (University of Education, Winneba/ Ghana)
Teacher education and schooling in Ghana started when western education was introduced in the form of ‘Castle schools’ by the Portuguese, the first Europeans to visit Ghana in 1471. At the initial stages of educational development, teaching in the schools in Ghana, as in other parts of West Africa, was modelled on the well-known monitorial systems of Joseph Lancaster and Andrew Bell (Hilliard 1957) which were popular in Britain and Canada at the beginning of the 19th century. In this system, the scarcity of trained teachers was somewhat short-circuited. Since then, teacher education and schooling in Ghana has gone through various reforms which mostly aimed to restructure the education system inherited from the British. This presentation contributes to the ongoing dialogue, implementation and understanding of the evolution of teacher education in Ghana and the impact of educational reforms on curricula, teaching and training which is geared towards teacher professionalization in Ghana. Participants will be exposed to some of the tenets of teacher professionalization such as the National Teacher Standards, Support Teaching in Schools, Teacher Licensure, Teaching Standards and Teacher Specialization.

Certificate programme ‘Teaching and learning at memorial sites’ at the memorial site at the Mainkofen district hospital
Enrolment now open: Further education course ‘Teaching and learning at memorial sites’ 2024/2025
The 6-day course ‘Teaching and Learning at Memorial Sites’ will start for the second time in autumn 2024/25 - an offer that has been developed and is being carried out in cooperation between the Mainkofen District Hospital, the Schloss Hartheim Learning and Memorial Site, the Deggendorf Institute of Technology and the University of Passau (Chair of Educational Science with a focus on diversity research and educational spaces of middle childhood).
The aim is the professional qualification of memorial site guides. The focus is on the memorial site at the Mainkofen Clinic and thus the stigmatisation, persecution and extermination of people who were categorised as ‘unworthy of life’ by the Nazis. In addition to historical foundations, local specialisation and an examination of concepts from the field of memorial pedagogy, the focus is on enabling students to reflect on their professional field.
The modules take place at the Mainkofen Clinical Centre, the Schloss Hartheim Learning and Memorial Site and the University of Passau and are supervised by specialists from the aforementioned institutions and the Deggendorf Institute of Technology.
The programme is aimed in particular at teachers and students from the healthcare professions, the education and social sectors and all interested parties.

Mobility programs for Bavarian and Japanese Student Teachers become specific: A visit in Kobe and Nara
Following the initial initiation in autumn 2023, a stay in Kobe and Nara was made possible as part of the global.trex project in order to specify mobility programs for Bavarian and Japanese student teachers and to explore joint research interests within the field of Teacher Education.
Prof. Dr. Christina Hansen (Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity, Head of the Chair of Educational Science) and Dr. Kathrin Eveline Plank (Deputy Head of the ZLF Internationalization Department) accepted the invitations from Nara University of Education in Southern Honshu and the Kobe University in central Japan.
In Nara, the guests from Passau had the opportunity to discuss the general potential of a partnership between the institutions with Prof. Maeda Koji (VP for International Relations and Regional Partnerships), Prof. Dr. Yoshimura Masahito (General Director), Prof. Dr. Yoriko Hashizaki and Yuta Nagumo (Senior Lecturers). Furthermore the scientists exchanged professional interests in the field of comparative educational research and talked about possible funding programs. As one result, specific mobility formats (e.g. a spring school for Passau students in Nara) have already been specified.
The Vice President's invitation to Kobe University by Dean Prof. Dr. Fumiko Fujinami (Graduate School of Intercultural Studies & Faculty of Global Human Sciences) and Prof. Dr. Hirotaka Inouye (Graduate School of Intercultural Studies) was also used to discuss potential areas of cooperation in the field of Teacher Education, inter alia in the context of foreign language training. The idea of an onboarding program at the Kobe Campus for Passau students completing their internship in Kobe is now to be further developed.
In addition to observing other internship options, the contractual and organizational framework conditions for the internship program starting in late summer 2024 were prepared together with Alex Inman, principal of the German International School Kobe (DISK).
Inter-university lecture series on global developments in teacher education - Winter Semester 2023/2024
The SMiLE (Smartphone Math Apps in Learning Environments) Project" on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Join the upcoming free online lecture "The SMiLE (Smartphone Math Apps in Learning Environments) Project" on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, 4:00 to 5:30 pm. "Developments in Teacher Education: Global Perspectives - International Lecture Series Winter Term 2023/2024".
Abstract:
"The project SMiLE in the international context of global.trex Passau Lehramt .international. Prof. Dr. Matthias Brandl and Jakob Heller, Universität Passau. Within the SMiLE project, challenges, experiences, and opportunities for international collaboration in the field of mathematics are presented, which are of interest to both teachers and students. Initially, the focus is on the dynamic geometry software GeoGebra, which offers various possibilities on mobile devices for free and can thus be integrated into an attractive and modern mathematics curriculum. Given the very different socio-cultural and organizational conditions in the participating countries, a comparative look at experiences with GeoGebra is worthwhile. Additionally, the current collaboration project of didactics and mathematics, Digital Interactive Mathematical Maps, is introduced."

In the winter semester 2023/24, student teachers can attend an inter-university online lecture series on global developments in teacher education. Lecturers from Germany and abroad will highlight challenges in teacher education and pedagogical approaches in different countries of the world.
The lecture series is a result of the cooperation of four Bavarian universities implementing projects on the internationalization of teacher education in the program "Lehramt. international" of the General Academic Exchange Service (#DAAD). In 2021, the projects BaTEG (Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg), FAU Lehramt International (Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg), global.trex Passau (University of Passau) and GoTEd (Julius-Maximilians University of Würzburg) joined forces and formed a network to promote the exchange of best practices and joint initiatives to improve the framework conditions for the internationalization of teacher education in Bavaria.
