Dr. Sören Keil ist seit Oktober 2024 Akademischer Rat an der Professur für Internationale Politik an der Universität Passau. Zuvor arbeitete er als Akademischer Leiter des Internationalen Forschungs- und Beratungszentrums am Institut für Föderalismus der Universität Freiburg in der Schweiz und war Associate Professor für Politik und Internationale Beziehungen an der Canterbury Christ Church University im Vereinigten Königreich, wo er auch den Studiengang Politik leitete. Damit verfügt er über mehr als 15 Jahre Erfahrung als Universitätsdozent und hat an verschiedenen Universitäten Kurse zu den Themen Europäische Politik, Konfliktlösung, Außenpolitikanalyse, Politik des Westlichen Balkans sowie Föderalismus und Dezentralisierung gehalten. Sören Keil ist ein Fellow der Bayrischen Forschungsallianz für Frieden-, Konflikt- und Sicherheitsforschung, und ein Senior Fellow am Centre for Federal Studies der University of Kent.

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Föderalismus/Dezentralisierung als Mittel zur Konfliktlösung, die Politik der Westlichen Balkanstaaten und die EU-Erweiterung. Zu diesen Themen hat er dreizehn Bücher verfasst, herausgegeben und mitherausgegeben, sowie zahlreiche Artikel in führenden Fachzeitschriften und Buchkapitel veröffentlicht, die sich hauptsächlich mit osteuropäischen Ländern, Demokratisierungsprozessen, Dezentralisierung und Föderalisierung befassen. Zudem ist er Mitherausgeber der Bücherreihe "Federalism and Internal Conflict" bei Palgrave, sowie der Reihe "Balkan Politics and Society" bei Ibidem.

Zu seinen Erfolgen bei der Forschungsfinanzierung gehören eine erfolgreiche Bewerbung um EU-Fördermittel im Rahmen von Horizon Europe (3,7 Mio. EUR) sowie umfangreiche Mittel des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds, des Schweizerischen Netzwerks für Internationale Studien, des James Madison Trust und des Erasmus-Plus-Programms der EU.

Sören Keil hat außerdem als internationaler Berater für mehrere Programme zu Dezentralisierung und Good Governance gearbeitet und ist derzeit an Diskussionen und Prozessen zu Debatten über die Teilung der Macht in verschiedenen Kontexten wie Myanmar, Syrien, Nepal, Libanon, aber auch Bosnien und Herzegowina, Nordmazedonien und Armenien beteiligt. Dabei hat er unter anderem als Consultant für die Vereinten Nationen, die OSZE, sowie die Weltbank gearbeitet.
