Assistant Professor
Dr. Simon Rowedder
Returning to Passau after more than 10 years of studying, working, and living in China and Southeast Asia, I am excited to contribute again to the academic community at my Alma Mater. Passau’s undergraduate programme of “International Cultural and Business Studies” has been decisive for establishing my research profile combining Chinese and Southeast Asian Studies. My further academic journey brought me to China (undergraduate exchange year at Yunnan University), MA in International Relations at Xiamen University), Thailand (Research Affiliate at Chiang Mai University) and ultimately to Singapore where I obtained my PhD in Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2018. During my subsequent three-year fellowship at NUS, I developed my doctoral dissertation into a book. This ethnography on cross-border trade networks in in the borderlands of Yunnan, Laos and Thailand will be published with Amsterdam University Press in July 2022. My research interests lie in economic anthropology, border studies and development studies with focus on Sino-Southeast Asian borderlands.
