Mission statement

Our faculty draws its strength from the diversity of research disciplines, their shared commitment to excellent individual and collective research and to distinction in teaching. This diversity is attested to by the line-up of study programmes, in the study courses, in the research queries and methods and, last but not least, in the personalities. Inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation is used to adequately address complex social phenomena. This is how we address current and future challenges. Another of our faculty's calling cards is the intercultural focus that is borne out by the extensive range of languages taught, the study of different cultural areas, the intense exchange with partner universities and in the implementation of various other internationalisation efforts.

We work together in trust and without prejudice. The professors share a sense of collegiality. All members of the faculty practice fairness in their communication with one another. We consider it part of our cooperation culture to take up suggestions and participate in an exchange with other faculties, the University Executive, external cooperation partners and the interested public. We set great store by our teaching- and research-related community projects and by the collaborative allocation of administrative tasks. Bureaucratic structures are limited to what is strictly necessary.

Our research activities in all areas are driven by a sense of responsibility. On that account, our key priorities include the ongoing improvement in the quality of degree programmes and the presentation of research results in a clear and understandable manner. In light of social change, we, as Faculty of Arts and Humanities, also recognise our responsibility in reflective and critical knowledge communication, which includes finding the courage to disagree.

We have a particular responsibility for the people we work with. Professors consider it their responsibility to support employees and students in their development as persons and scientists. Professors, all the graduate teaching assistants and students alike share the responsibility for successful fulfilment of our tasks.
