Binational doctoral programmes
Upon successful completion of a binational doctoral programme (cotutelle de thèse), you will be awarded one single doctorate jointly by two distinct universities in different countries. The rationale for this is that the doctorate is based on a single academic achievement supervised by two universities. Both universities work closely together during the entire doctoral procedure. This concerns both the selection and supervision on the one hand, and the assessment of the doctoral candidate on the other. The legal basis for this arrangement is the cotutelle agreement: without this agreement, a binational cotutelle de thèse is not possible.
Further information on the Cotutelle de Thèse
The cotutelle procedure is particularly suitable for all early career researchers who:
- wish to do research on an international scale
- want to combine their research focus with the other country
- attach importance to ensuring their scientific connection in both countries
- have yet to decide in which of the countries they will want to work later on
Further information on the cotutelle de thèse can be obtained from the Dean's Office.
Binational doctorate as part of the cooperation agreement between the University of Passau and Andrássy University Budapest
In winter semester 2014, a cooperation agreement was signed between Andrássy University Budapest (AUB) and its interdisciplinary doctoral school and the University of Passau and its Faculty of Arts and Humanities to carry out binational doctorates (cotutelle de thèse). This gives doctoral candidates the opportunity to study for a doctorate under the supervision of professors from both universities and thereby to obtain a doctoral degree awarded jointly by both universities. The binational doctoral procedure is governed by the cooperation agreement in conjunction with the doctoral degree regulation of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Passau as well as the doctoral programme regulation and the rules of procedure of AUB's interdisciplinary doctoral school.
