Indonesia field trip 2017
Nineteen students took part in the excursion to Indonesia in 2017, which was led by Dr. Kristina Großmann and Lita Priatna. A special highlight of this trip was a visit to the village of Cangkring in West Java, organized in collaboration with Professor Yunita Winarto of our partner university, the University of Indonesia (Depok, West Java). Students spent several nights in the village in the company of 10 students from the University of Indonesia, who acted as intermediaries between the two worlds and helped the German students to overcome cultural and language barriers. The village is located about 5 km from the north coast of Java and villagers’ livelihoods are based mainly on fish and shrimp farming, as well as the sale of seagrass. The students lived with the villagers, providing a unique opportunity to become familiar with the villagers’ daily lives, and their occupational, cultural and religious activities. The German students carried out small research projects in collaboration with the Indonesian counterparts, exploring a range of issues in the village, such as economic conditions, gender relations, environmental awareness, the problem of waste, and interactions with ethnic minorities.
